Another situation like Jobs being ousted?
This past weekend at OpenAI was like a TV drama. On Friday, the CEO, Sam Altman, got fired. This move also led Greg Brockman and other big names to join Microsoft.
OpenAI's structure is a bit tricky, but here's the gist: the non-profit board calls the shots, focusing on creating top-notch AI safely, not just pleasing shareholders. They said Altman wasn't clear with them, so they lost faith in his leadership.
They also bumped Brockman from his chairman role and named CTO Mira Murati Murady as interim CEO. Altman tweeted about the mess, and Brockman said he was proud of their work but disagreed with what happened and quit.
The public was going crazy over the news and lots of discussions led to bringing him back on.
By Saturday, things were looking up for Altman's return as CEO. The board was set to discuss it before a 5 pm deadline. Lots of employees shared Altman's tweet about loving the OpenAI team.
He even showed up at the office with a guest tag to get back in. The board was waiting to see the result of the talks and Microsoft wanted in on the action.
On Sunday, it all stalled: Altman wasn't coming back as CEO, and Emmett Shear stepped in as interim CEO. Then Microsoft's Satya Nadella swooped in and welcomed Altman and Brockman to Microsoft. They're excited to support them there.
There's also buzz that around 730 employees might leave OpenAI for Microsoft unless the board steps down and brings Altman back. So now, Altman's with Microsoft, and others might follow unless things at OpenAI go back to how they were with him in charge. We'll have to wait and see how this unfolds—it's quite the scene!
